QB 2003 keeps crashing

Postby noahsarkbooks on Tue Nov 20, 2007 10:07 am

When I create or edit long invoices (3-5 pages long), QB crashes and I lose all of the info I just typed in. It only seems to happen on really long invoices.

I am going to upgrade to QB 2007 (maybe) and wonder if anyone else has had this problem in QB 2003.

I also was wondering if anyone has any feedback on QB 2007 and the multi-user environment. I have to run in multi-user and have heard some bad things about the speed of the product.

Thanks for any input.

For the Invoices: How big is your company file (press CTRL-1 while in the file and see what it says next to File Size)? Once a file passes 150 MB or so (300-500 in Enterprise), it will often slow down and become more susceptible to corruption due to sheer bulk.

One solution could be to break up those big Invoices into smaller chunks, say 1-2 pages each. It could be something as simple as your computer's Hard Drive or (more likely) RAM/memory not being able to keep up, especially if your system dates back a few years.

re: updating: It couldn't hurt. The current version is 2008, which is about the same price as 2007 was in any case (in certain situations/setup, it's actually a bit less, I believe). We offer it for sale on our site for less than what the guys who make the software charge, if you're interested ( http://www.quickbooks-help.com ). It has been my experience that the 2007 version does have speed issues, tho it has improved in that area for the 2008 version. Please keep in mind that either one will have steeper system requirements than 2003 does, especially for Multi-User.

For Multi-User, I strongly recommend a Server-Client setup. MU mode can be a bit slower than single-user, but not usually by much. If speed drops drastically when switching between the two modes, that's usually indicative of a network problem, or else that one of the Client systems is "Hosting" the data file instead of letting the Server handle that.

The best way to find out about 2008 is to go to http://www.quickbooks.com and download a free Trial version, and see what you think. Remember to make a copy of your data file first, and use the "2008" version as a sandbox, not for your real data -- once you have upgraded the file to anything later than QB2003, it will no longer function under QB2003. Be sure to keep your real data and your "sandbox" data separate, preferably in different directories with different names.

Just as a side note: QB 2007 and 2008 are "Vista-compatible", the earlier ones are not. That being said, I strongly advise against switching to Vista if you have a choice in the matter (If you must switch, use Business/Pro/Ultimate, not Home). The OS itself still has a lot of problems, especially with QuickBooks. XP Pro is your best bet if you're not using it already. Do not, under any circumstances, use XP Media Center Edition in a networked environment (many laptops come with MCE for soem reason), it's more trouble than it's worth.
