If you have more then one license, you can have different companies open on different computers, yes. However, you cannot do so on one computer unless you have two different version years of QB (eg: QB 2007 (with a qb2007 file open) and QB 2008 (with a qb2008 file open)). Only permitting one instance to be opened at a time is an intentional design limitation, I believe -- mainly to help people avoid entering transactions or other data into the wrong file.
